I come from a family of veterans of foreign wars. My begetter served in World War Ii as an Army staff sergeant and my brother served in Viet Nam as an Air Force technical sergeant. My grandfathers may have served besides, but I'm not certain because they're gone at present, along with anyone who might know their military histories.

My brother is 10 years older than me, and so I was just x or and so when he went to Viet Nam. I call up existence very tranquillity every bit we ate dinner that night before taking him to the airport to get overseas. I was pretty sure he was never coming back. Thankfully he did, but not before losing xl percent of the hearing in one of his ears from working day after day on loud B52 bomber engines.

The state of war besides took quite an emotional toll on him, every bit it did for many others. My male parent and blood brother had matching reel-to-reel recorders, then we sent voice tapes back and forth from Los Angeles to Viet Nam. He told us when he got back that when mail service call came and at that place wasn't a letter, card or recording from united states, he would just stand there and cry. And as many soldiers did, he turned to alcohol to numb the terrible fearfulness a 19-year-old -- or anyone -- would feel existence so far from home in a place where bombs are falling all around you. It took him years to move on from using alcohol to blot out pain, only I'1000 happy to say he hasn't done that for a very long time.

My male parent also served overseas, just I take piddling memory of him talking about his experiences. Since he passed away when I was 14 (which was several eons agone), the few stories I've heard have been forgotten.

As a Vet and Retiree, I appreciate the endeavor yous've made in sharing your personal stories for all to see. Information technology's easy to say you "Support the Troops". It's some other thing entirely to put those words into actions.

Vietnam has washed things to my life I will never comprehend, maybe it'due south not mine to understand, but later on all these years I yet don't think it was supposed to exist this fashion, alone as all hell.
